UNDERSTANDING THE REFUGEE CRISIS - 2

Let us have an intrinsic look into the political and economic details of those countries from where the people are fleeing away. The first such country stands out to be Syria.

As we have discussed already, the major reason for the Syrian refugee crisis is the ages long political instability in the country. The political cohesion and the unity among the opposition groups in the country against the political regime of Bashar al Assad is growing day by day since 2011( the rise of Arab spring). Why is there any opposition actually? Syria became an independent republic in 1946 but there was no chance for the people to have enjoyed the liberty as the democratic rule was soon ended in a takeover by the coup abolishing the human rights. There was no liberty to people nor they could work or gather in groups. The militants were ruthless to the common people. Ever since, people waited for the ray of hope to kiss their foreheads and make them believe and stand up for that beautiful taste of life. In 1963, coup d'etat was defeated and Syria was taken over by the Ba'ath party. But the Syrians's economic and social conditions plunged even more. The state was called for an emergency rule in 1963 and continued until 2011. The emergency rule implies no freedom. The people were killed blatantly on roads or lynched to death who questioned the government. It was more or less a monarchy, though Assad promised for the reforms of liberty. This was the beginning where people started to think it is absolutely the right choice to flee Syria and reach a safer place. "Die here without a reason or die in the pursue of tasting the sweetness of life." This is what all the syrians believed and started fleeing to the other countries with a hope for a better livelihood and better treatment with all needed rights. They do not expect luxuries but the basic amenities for them to survive.

Slowly, a rebellious group started to emerge against the government of Assad which worsened the scenario of Syria. More and more people started to take in arms and more than 220000 people were assassinated or executed to death. This massacre of the mass is one of the reasons for the birth of the most dangerous militant group, the ISIS. The insurgencies and the frequent battles in Syria, though for the cause of freedom, is leaving the commons with no peace. This is leaving them with the only option to fly away somewhere far. Moreover, the ISIS problem has grown so massive that now it has become the problem of the world. The developed countries bombing into iraq and Syria to stabilise the ISIS is another cause that is prompting people to flee.

Now, after knowing the problems in syria, do you think that people who are taking a refuge at the neighbouring or the other countries are at wrong? Are not they, humans like us and run for their livelihood and safety? When they think there is no solution to this problem and no security for their lives at their home country, what else can they do there except for counting the days for death? So they flee.

The next country for discussion is Afghanistan which runs on the similar lines as Syria. The Afghan-Soviet war against the Mujahideen(insurgent group) lasted for approximately ten years which led to the influx of one fifth of the population to the other places for survival. Later, the rapid growth in the Taliban( militant group) also led to the biggest exodus due to the atrocities on the common people. The American NATO forces had set their base in Afghanistan in order to shun the Taliban. But the attacks on Militant forces took away the lives of about 60 percent of the common population which made people impatient leading to the mass influx.

What are the refugees blamed for? Are not they common people struggling to live? Is not the problem within the political regime of those countries? Another sad story comes of Eritrea which almost invoked me with all the pity for those who are affected. Understanding about Eritrea, Iraq and Kosovo along with the solutions for the problem as of my perspective will be dealt in the next blog.
