An Ember in the Ashes

Sabaa Tahir

YA Fantasy

"Life is made of so many moments that mean nothing. Then one day, a single moment comes along to define every second that comes after."

"You are an ember in the ashes. You will spark and burn, ravage and destroy. You cannot change it. You cannot stop it."

"All the beauty in stars means nothing when life here on earth is so ugly."

"There are two kinds of guilt: the kind that drowns you until you're useless, and the kind that fires your soul to purpose. Let your guilt be your fuel. Let it remind you of who you want to be. Draw a line in your mind. Never cross it. You have a soul. It's damaged, but it's there. Don't let anyone take it from you."

"Fear can be good. It can keep you alive. But don't let it control you. Don't let it sow doubts within you. When fear takes over, use the only thing more powerful, more indestructible, to fight it. Your heart."

Characters: Laia, Elias Veturius, Helena Aquilla, keris Veturia, Darin, Izzi, Keenan.

To begin with, Laia and Elias are the main characters. The book contemplates the contemporary stories of the both. Laia, a slave girl, innocent and pretty, loses her parents( the heads of resistance). Her only brother is arrested for treason  by the empire. Her story is a pursuit of freeing her brother. On the other hand, Elias, the soldier is a chosen aspirant for the empire. Handsome and empathetic, he goes against the ruthlessness of the empire and becomes a fugitive. Meanwhile, Laia and Elias cross their paths. The emanating affection between them keeps them alive and going. Did they achieve their motives and go against the empire? Did they succeed? What do they further discover? This with some added magic, nightbringers, augurs...makes this book a good read overall.
