THE RESPONSE TO THE WOES OF NORTH EAST INDIA!

The North Eastern Region comprises the following eight States:
 Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura. They have the following special features:
  1. The seven States of the North Eastern Region barring Sikkim are linked to the rest of India through the 26 km long Siliguri Corridor commonly known as Chicken's neck.  They therefore form an integrated geographical unit.
  2. Sikkim became officially a part of the North Eastern Region in 2002.
  3. 98% of NER's border is bounded by India's international neighbours.
  4. The region offers great diversity – of topography, climatic conditions, language, religion, ethnicity and yet has common developmental challenges.
  5. Barring Assam, the other States are hilly.
  6. Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Mizoram are overwhelmingly tribal.  The other four States also have substantial tribal population.
  7. Infrastructure deficit in the region, particularly connectivity in all forms is acute.
  8. The economy of the region is overwhelmingly agricultural.
    For the above reasons, the development challenges for these eight States require special attention.

 Therefore, the Union Government set up the Department of Development of North Eastern Region in September, 2001 and upgraded it to a Ministry in May, 2004 underscoring the its complete commitment to ensure development with equity for the NER to unleash the potential of its human and natural resources.

 Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region or DONER, as it is commonly known, is a unique Ministry in the Union Government as its activities are regional and more importantly advocating the special needs of the region to the other Ministries/Departments and policy makers.

PSEPHOLOGY

INTRODUCTION: Psephology is simply the study of elections or survey for the prediction of election results. It basically depicts the election campaigns, election processes, the participants and employs statistical analysis to evaluate, analyse and interpret the predicted results on the basis of studying the people's behaviour. Psephology is derived from a Greek word Psephos meaning pebbles. An interesting story is related to the the adoption of this name. Civil aviation sector in India has been prospering from the times known. At present, India has the most refined and organised aviation sector.
