JAPAN DURING THE WORLD WAR 1

INTRODUCTION:
Japan was the nation that put efforts to come out of seclusion during the late 19th century. It realized the importance of its nationality, religion, language, territory and people. This led Japan to secure its territory in the conquering world of that day.
Firstly it wanted to expand its Teritorry to meet the other great powers and thus become one of the greatest powers of the world.
So it eyed on chinese teritorry and the pacific islands which were then under the control of Germany. Japan did not play a major role in the world war 1. But that minor role shook the other countries and made it the most powerful nation then.
1894 - The dispute over the korean region which was considered strategically important to both the nations led to the Sino-Japanese war in which Japan enjoyed the tremendous victory.
1902 - This was the period when Japan went into military alliance with Britain.
1905 - Russo Japanese war over the teritorries of Manchuria and Korea. Russia was expanding its teritorry towards the south and Japan was tensed to protect its own teritorry thus waged a war on Russia. This is a milestone in Japan's history as it faced a victory in the war gaining the control over the two regions.
1906 - Britain entered the world war 1 and seeked the military and naval aid from Japan according to the military alliance of 1902.
1914 - Japan sent an ultimatum to Germany to withdraw its ships from the Japanese and Chinese waters and surrender Tsingtao and Shandung to Japan. When Germany did not respond to the ultimatum, Japan waged a war on German navy in Tsingtao and the Germans surrendered the teritorry with the Japan's victory.
1915 - The victory over Germany made Japan the most powerful player. Thus, it placed a 21 demand agreement with China which led to the exploitation of Chinese raw materials and labour.
Then, occupied Shandung province and took control of most of the Chinese teritorry.
1919 - The treaty of Versailles by the league of nations was the peace agreement after the war and the major powers including Japan were invited to discuss the treaty. Thus the treaty ended with the Japan having control over all the pacific islands formerly under the control of Germans and then the the control over Shandung province leaving behind the sovereignty of the Chinese teritorry.
 MY PERSPECTIVE:
Japan, according to me was a timid country with no foreign relations in the beginning of second half of the 19th century. After the realisation of its ability after the victory over China and Japan, it wanted to become the super power and occupy China which was its major bitter rival. It wanted to make it the most powerful in the pacific region, thus when asked by Britain for the naval aid, accepted bluntly foreseeing its benefits. It accepted to aid Britain only if the German islands in the pacific region would be awarded to Japan after the war. Japan which once went into a war with Russia made out to be its ally in the world war 1. It was all the strategy of political and teritorrial advantage which drove Japan to align with the allies.
